The current Roanoke Marshes Lighthouse which is located in Shallowbag Bay in Manteo is a replica of the third lighthouse to carry that same name. The first was constructed in 1877 on the southern end of the Croatan Sound in the village of Wanchese on Roanoke Island.
The restored Roanoke River Lighthouse now stands proudly in the harbor at Edenton, NC.. The lighthouse first served as a guide for ships navigating the waters of the Albemarle Sound into the Roanoke River and then, after being decommissioned in 1941, was moved by barge across the sound to private land. This is the actual restored Lighthouse that was built in 1886 and restored by the Edenton Historical Commission and then given to the State of North Carolina,
The lighthouse is situated at the eastern end of Oak Island and is a prominent landmark for mariners approaching the Cape Fear River and the Atlantic Intracoastal Waterway. It was built in 1958 to replace the outdated Bald Head Island Lighthouse which was no longer in use. The Lighthouse has a distinctive black and white exterior. It is a conical tower made of steel and its light has a white flash every 10 seconds and can be seen up to 16 nautical miles from the coast.
