There are some who say we should hide or destroy all traces of this terrible war but I think we should keep and display all the reminders of what happened during this time so that people never forget the horror of this war and the reason it was fought. I’m not saying that the southern soldiers who fought should be glorified for the reason they fought but for the bravery they displayed and their dedication to their cause no matter how wrong we feel they were. All who fought on both sides should be remembered, honored, and revered and the battle sites protected for posterity.

Fort Sumter
The attack on Fort Sumter is generally taken as the first shots fired at the beginning of the American Civil War. The Battle of Fort Sumter began on April 12, 1861, when South Carolina Militia artillery fired from shore on the Union garrison. These were, both sides agreed, the first shots of the war. The bombardment continued all day, watched by many happy civilians. The fort had been cut off from its supply line and surrendered the next day.
